Afternoon all.
I've been struggling with this issue for a couple of days now and it's driving me mad, hope someone has resolved it before or has some ideas.
I'm using roaming profiles with folder re-direction set for the start menu and desktop for pupils. Everyone has been moaning to death about the awful logon times so I used policy reporter to see why the machines were hanging for an age on the 'Applying your personal settings...' splash. It appears while the user policy for applying the folder redirections is being set i'm getting a 20 seconds delay which i can't get rid of.
Both policies have 'Move contents to new location' and 'grant user exclusive' unchecked and i've removed all shortcuts to files which might not be present and still no joy.
Any ideas ? Thanks in advance for any suggestions

I would start by checking ALL of your DNS settings are correct.

I thought that might come up
I'm getting a lot of bad packets from the dhcp server whilst trying to update clients and I think I may have an unintentional disjointed namespace causing problems
some machines will resolve without FQDN some won't and some can't even get A records created.
maybe i should change the thread to DNS troubleshooting heh

netdiag /fix from a cmd prompt on your DNS server.
This should fix any problems with your DNS regarding the A records, but not 100% sure.
Check the MS article HERE

The netdiag tool has always reported as everything passing. The few machines that don't have A records are ones which have been recently imaged with ghost which i assume messed something up (it usually does).
the other machines that are taking an age to apply folder redirection seem fine with DNS working ok and all records correct and resolving the correct addresses
I've always had a feeling the root cause is DNS though

This sounds a lot like the old chestnut folder redirection and roaming profile issue.

Did you RIS the ghost image or use the NEWSID tool form Sysinternal to make sure all the imaged PC's get new SIDs.
Can't remember 100% but this jogs my memory to a similar problem in a primary school that had these issues and it was due to the images not being correctly ripreped before imagining.
