Yes, I did wonder when we'd get round to that. Hence the hint in my last post.

Re: The whole roaming/mandatory/default profile debate

I think what tarquel is saying is that if an individual has a windows setup and has a problem - he would want to know the solution to his particular setup and problem and not how to do it with Linux.

It's good to see that we have experts on Linux here as with Windows, that's what makes this forum so useful. It loses that usefulness when an individual asks a question about a windows problem and is bombarded with 'how to do it in Linux' (and vis-a-vis).

Each school and individual has there own systems in place that suit the way they work - we all know that a change to different OS or kit is extremely difficult due to lack of funds or dinosours in charge.

Yes I know it's in the wrong thread - I just follwed those before me

Re: The whole roaming/mandatory/default profile debate

The WIKI pages on User Profiles are at a stage where I would invite comments from those of you who are interested or have opinions on the way user profiles can or should be managed. I hope we can get the basic content to a level whereby it addresses the most common questions about profiles, but I'm sure it will need lots of changes first.

My thanks to mark and sahmeepee for getting it all started.

Re: The whole roaming/mandatory/default profile debate

There's no mention of making a Default user profile in the netlogin share to override the local default user profile.

Re: The whole roaming/mandatory/default profile debate

    It does ...
"If there is a ‘default user’ profile stored on the NETLOGON share of the logon server, then this is used in preference to the local version." as well as section 13 of http://www.russdev.com/edugeek/doku...._user_profiles

This section could do with a little more info about folder redirection being used since this seems to be a commonly used to the domain default profile.

Damn fine work if you ask me ... well done.

Re: The whole roaming/mandatory/default profile debate

Well done AJB. I have added a note at the bottom of the roaming profiles section advising about large profiles and problems that they may cause.

Re: The whole roaming/mandatory/default profile debate

@DB: Thanks. I have added a note to your note to mention that the problems described can be avoided by using redirected folders to store documents and desktop on the server and setting a limit on profile size.

Re: The whole roaming/mandatory/default profile debate

I'll add a section on the Linux/samba way of doing it.
