Network Printers going offline since 2003sp2

I seem to have a problem with my network printers going offline since i installed Service Pack 2. I have looked around the web and found referances to the same problem but no real solution one guy talks about deleting his printers but I have too many to really consider that soloution.

Has anyone came across this? more to the point does anyone have a solution?

Check print spooler in Services.msc, we had this stop a couple of times. Other than that we had to delete and reinstall the printer to sort out the problem.

Uninstall sp2. I had problems with sp2 and exchange 2007 not being able to install. When i did some digging on sp2 i found there were a load of issues and you had to run some pre requests before installing sp2. My personal opinion is not install sp2 yet.

I will try and find that link for the microsoft site with the prerequests on

Re: Network Printers going offline since 2003sp2

WE have SP2 on our Print Server, it holds 58 network printers and we have not had any problems since it has been on. Yes the spooler will stop every now and then (no more than once a fortnight when their are a lot of print jobs stuck in printers) but this did this before SP2.

One thing i would check is that all your printers have the latest revision drivers on. We did have an issue with a dodgy driver, we did not know a new revision had been released and as soon as i we updated it it was fine.

thanks for that tosca, but would a driver make the printer go offline? I have not had this problem till SP2 although I will look at the drivers just incase.

Yes, it made one of our Brothers go offline. It would print a test page then go offline. No matter what we did it would not work until we reset it then it would successfully print one job then go offline again.

Changed/upgraded driver then it worked ok.

Ok I have found newer printer drivers, so I changed them and still have the same problem, so I deleted the printer and then created a new printer and it went offline within about a minute.

So anyone have any ideas I do wonder about this SP2 issue, how bad is it to remove SP2 from 2003 anyone done it?

I had the same issue. You need to apply this hotfix or do the manual part of disabling the SNMP for each printer port in the print server.

I manually did it without touching the registry on the server since we are not using any SNMP management for thes printers.

In your browser go to support.microsoft.com/kb/946198
