OpenSource wise there is Xibo and there is something else that I can't remember the name of (Starts with C or something).

If you search around there is a few threads on the forums about digital sign-age solutions.

I use ShowPoint, it just displays the newest powerpoint in a folder, so if you update the powerpoint it automatiaclly picks up the changes.
Its very simple but it works really well.

Using signagestudio (Digital Signage | FREE Professional Digital Signage for everyone) just started using it last week, seems like an excellent bit of software from what i've seen of it. The tutorial videos are quite thorough and very helpful, got a pretty decent display up pretty quickly with it.

Only posting because I was looking for the same thing recently. If you dedicate a machine to the monitor or TV freebloo.com is a good solution. Simple to install and easy to use. Only having a bit of a problem with getting my images to be prefect as backgrounds. Other than that this works great for someone not wanting to get into the trenches to get digital signage.
