Can I ask what OS and office version you are on?

    W7 32bit, Office 2010.

Personally it sounds like you're trying to login with SkyDrive or something silly. Might be worth clearing any logins you got.

well I have more important things to worry about

but I cannot see why it's prompting - bleeding MS - does nt do it on google chrome....

and if you save it first then open you obviously don't get the prompt either

Prompts me too, Win7x32, IE, Office 2010. Could be something in the document itself like edit tracking or something that is requesting a live ID when it is opened from a remote location.

    S'office 2010.

All works perfectly without saving first here using IE on Win7 32bit and Off2007, WinXP and Off2007, & WinXP and OffXP with Off07 Compatibility Pack... have a look on the net for Office docs prompting for credentials, there's a lot of folks moaning about it.
