XP Pro SP3 fails to run updates and Flash

I have one XP Pro Samsung R509 laptop which refuses to run Windows Updates, Flash Player or Shockwave. Other downloads (Sliverlight, Adobe Reader etc run with no issues at all?

try this for the Windows Updates

    @echo off
rem Batch file to clear the BITS queued jobs:
    net stop bits
    net stop wuauserv
    Del /q "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application
    Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\qmgr0.dat"

    Del /q "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application
    Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\qmgr1.dat
    Rd /s /q "%Windir%\SoftwareDistribution\"
    net start bits
    net start wuauserv
    wuauclt /detectnow

copy and paste into a batch file

We have the odd issue here with new install PCs. Installing IE8 manually sometimes helps, or randomly it just suddenly works - this is for updates via WSUS though

shockwave is old n crud, flashplayer you should use the active x MSI from Adobe and some windows updates require the laptop to be running from mains to install?

other wise (unlikely) you're out of hdd space, or have a permissions issue. Some installs require a restart like a new IE and prevent other programs from installing until you reset the PC.

I normally update the microsoft windows installer to version 4.5 I think it is :

Download details: Windows Installer 4.5 Redistributable

think you can also do some other stuff ie unregister and re register windows installer

&#34Windows Installer Service could not be accessed&#34 error message when installing application

&#34The Windows Installer service could not be accessed&#34 error message when you try to install Office

Error message when you try to add or remove a program on a computer that is running Windows XP or Windows Server 2003&#58 &#34The Windows Installer service could not be accessed&#34

    1st or 3rd link

Thanks for all the extremely useful replies folks.

I have now tried all the suggestions (Fresh Installer and Fresh IE8 included) but still Adobe Flash refuses to run - so things like the page that allows selection of Express or otherwise on XP Updated fails to display as well.

Looking further into this I have a feeling it's something to do with Pop Ups. I have set allow pop ups from Adobe and incidentally RM Easymail and added these to trusted sites but still these things won't run. Is it something in the Registry that needs a tweak?

How are you trying to install Flash? MSI or from the website download manager?

Tried the download and through Cnet it actually installed but still refuses to run Flash content in IE8. Just installed Mozilla and Flash through it and that installed fine. But still no Flash through IE8.
