I've got an issue with one of my servers having a underscore in is name so I need to rename it.
Its the Sims server so it has SQL on.
Has anyone done this with Netdom before? Its a DC so I'm cautious about messing everything up.
Luckily its Easter so I have 3 weeks to sort it out. I may take the chicken way out and DCpromo, remove from domain etc etc....
I have renamamed my domain before. I didnt use netdom though theres a special tool for the task it does have a fair few steps but can be relatively painless.
Q. How does renaming a domain affect affect the workstations?
I assume they all need to be re-configured.
I've never renamed a "live" domain before only test ones and have had the luxury of setting up all or my domains from scratch or in tandem with existing ones.

ps sorry to hijack your thread like that.
No reconfiguration of workstations necessary. It is all taken care of with the domain renaming process. I cant say specifics as I dont have my notes with me and I am not gonna quote the great oracle that is google as it's better to read it first hand.
Thanks. I've downloaded all the relvant stuff from MS. Looks straightforward enough.
I don't need to do it, I was just intersted in what happenes and how it does the job.

I think you set something up temporarily so when the clients log onto the DC the changes are made then later when your happy everything has been changed you disable it.
Sorry i just read you question properly and your only renaming the DC and not the domainops:
Tbh I would probably opt for the chicken way and back the AD up to temporary DC.
Well its sunday morning and I've done it with RDP.
I used the netdom command to add another name to the server then made it primary, rebooted and then removed the original name.
It was the SQL that I was worried about but that name has changed too.
Just had to change the connect.ini, the logon script mapping and the home folder mapping.
Now to install CRM 3.0
