For some reason, the above printer has decided to ask for labels every time a job is printed
The printer is connected to a Server 2003 box via a TCP/IP port and ther is no mention of labels in the driver settings on the print server.
I have rebooted the printer and reinstalled it on the print server with no luck... when the clients connect it still defaults to wanting labels
Although not the end of the world since you can press the 'tick' to get the job to come out, kids aren't known for their competency and ability to read the little LCD display.

Has someone been into the menu of the printer itself and changed the default paper?
I don't have the 2300 series but I do have one 2400 and have found someone changed the paper size to legal which had the same effect.

@BooBoo: Should have mentioned that every paper setting in the printer is also set to A4.

you could try the reset to factory settings option in the printer menu itself just to get rid of any little bugs that may be there. i'm sure you can do this on those printers! just print a menu map and it should be in there somewhere.
other than that try hp's website for firmware updates for it!

Do the clients recieve any message or is it just on the LCD display?

Something tells me this is more than just a paper size thing but may be a media type setting... I'll check the HP laser we have in the other school (be there later this afternoon).
I'd go with a factory reset though and see if the printer defaults have been retained on the print server machine despite the driver reinstall...

I is definately a media type problem since it is asking for A4 labels. I suspect it is a driver-related issue since my Linux print server works fine.

I had this issue a while ago and I checked that the printer settings were selecting A4 un specified and that I had saved that as the default.
I then also went into the printer settings and made it so that it was set to any paper type and any paper size.
I then went to the printers settings on the print server and went to properties and made sure that the device settings for the printer was set to A4 for each tray.
Just some things to try out or at least make sure that when they print that it has A4 selected as well as going to the properties of the printer and making sure that the settings for the printer they have selected is actually set to A4.

if it's a shared printer, check that the printing defaults are not set to something silly... i know it's fairly obvious, but very possible to overlook.

Ok managed to take a look at the laser settings we have here and it does indeed have these options under the "Paper/Quality" tab..
Size is: A4/letter/etc...
Source is: Tray1, Tray2, etc...
Type is: Plain, Preprinted, Labels, etc...
So it seems you can actually specify the media and type... I'm guessing some little darling has changed the defaults or just put a job through using those settings and that's clogging the print queue (seen it happen with our one).
Just to note that the printer here is a "HP Color LaserJet 3550" but I'd guess the settings are probably similar... Hope that helps.

@contink: You can indeed specify the paper size AND media type. All trays are set to Plain A4 and I have even tried disabling trays. The driver seems to keep resetting on the clients though... whilst the server settings on the server are OK.
Something annoyingly strange is going on. At the moment I am going to stick with my Pykota box because it is a good test.

Nothing like a problem like this to push you to go with something you'd planned to for ages and not had the time
Of course a hammer could resolve the problem permanently for you too
