I know that there must be a away to do this...
1. Student plugs in portable audio device (digital dictaphone) and downloads WMA file - no DRM or anything
2. Student clicks/drags said downloaded file and some magic happens to convert it into a WAV file for editing in audacity or similar

it would be dead easy to do it with mplayer, maybe a php script on a webserver? or email it to a unix server that processess the file and mails it back?

depending upon how the webpage was designed - it could be made really easy "upload file here" etc and spit out an mp3.
same with the email , surely kids can add an atachment and mail it to mp3convertor@wherever
or am I really out of touch with the general level of IT education?~
