XP - how long left ?

Extended Support for XP runs out in April 2014 - I'm still happy with it on our network - a few work colleges may disagree. I am wondering how long other schools will be using it for ?
My only real concern is new kit - will companies still write XP drivers etc.....
Also other comments regarding keeping it for another year would be interesting to read.
    Thanks.

I'm still XP throughout the school. Changing to 7 fills me with dread, not because of the software....because of the staff!

We moved to the schools agreement about a year and a half ago, so windows 7 was a nobrainer for us. Over the summer (xmas) holidays we have pretty much upgraded everything to windows 7, with the exception of the Finance dept and related computers who will move over slowly and carefully..

We started off with a voluntary group of staff who we upgraded first, about 20 of them, and through their feedback we tweaked our images/settings etc till we got it right..

We then just let staff come and see us in an adhoc manner and migrated them one at a time over the space of about 6 months so it was a gradual change. This actually snowballed, as staff wuold see the new shiny windows 7, and then feel left out or whatever, and want it for themselves..

We got a new batch of laptops halfway through last year that we put windows 7 on, so the students got a taste of it, and now when they start back in Feb all their machines will be 7..

Got a PD week coming up soon, which we have been given 2x 4hr sessions dedicated to windows 7 / office 2010, so hopefully come the start of term, it should be plain sailing..

(not sure if this answers your question or if ive just rambled)

When M$ announced support was finished mid-way through this year we were planning to go Vanilla. When they then turned round and said 2014 it filled me with joy (literally), and we will plan to keep it here until support is finished.

If it ain't broke and all that

I'm keen to do the update to something more modern here, and with the new licensing scheme with MS, we may just start thinking about doing it in the next year.

We're hopefully going to be doing the upgrade in Summer 2012. We originally wanted to do it this summer but circumstances got in the way and we don't think we have the time to plan it properly.

All Windows 7 here. No major problems, most of the smaller ones where sorted during testing. Actually thinking going Win 7 x64 due to Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 being x64 only.

Probably next year for us as I want to get the server backend up to 2008 R2 first. I always see the desktop and server OS as a package and like to keep them in step. Also need to allow our tutors time to move their course packs over to 7 for file management etc (teaching PC beginners).

Tbh it's not so much any technical reason for wanting to upgrade (apart from maybe BitLocker) but just to get the new shiny interface on the PCs to keep up with what people get on new PCs at home!

Out of interest which did you deploy... Windows 7 x64 or x86?

Mix of XP and 7 here, XP will only be phased out with the old hardware - many of our machines are not up to the new OS. Anything new has 7 on it though, x64 or x86.

I suspect I won't have to look at Windows 7 for at least 2 years due to financial constraints. We have a lot of PCs and laptops that are running XP quite happily and do the job they're needed for but are probably too old for Windows 7. The cost of hardware replacement alone would be far too high at the moment.
