Allowing Users to see their Disk Quota and what they have left?

    Morning guys,

Anyone know of any useful software or tips that will allow users to be kept upto date with their quota and how much room they have remaining?

Back when I was at school YEARRRSSS ago we had a tool that when you logged in told you how much quota we had remaining and if necessary took you to a screen to delete some files before letting you continue. Anything like that about?

    Are you using FSRM?

(If so I'd like to also be able to show a user how much storage they have, rather than the total free space of the drive.)

    Gooooood question Sam.

That would be invaluable here too! Far too many tutors (and support staff) think it's fine to go right up to their quota, and then get on the phone and beg for more.

I would be most interested to find something that would show this, and allow them to delete stuff.

we use a samba file system for storage and quotas - students get emailed if they are within their soft and hard quota limits, they can also right click on their mapped drive in XP to get a pie chart of their usage.

If you use FSRM on the server for document storage and Windows 7 clients (not sure about Vista) this info shows in My Computer.

I think Teachers and Students need to be reminded though as they won't check it themselves.

If you are using FSRM to quota based on directory you need: Windows server 2008 or 2008 R2 for the server, clients will need to be Vista or 7. These added SMB 2.0 support which can query folder level quota information.

you can do the same thing with Samba, which works on XP as well, costs nothing in licensing, takes about 2 hours to set up, can be setup to autocreate users homedirectories, allows veoted files, email notifications .
howto here: Samba Homedirectory - Wiki

again, should be relatively easy to do with samba; you could use the root preexec option to run the 'quota' command when the user access their homedrive (or when they save?). The quota command outputs to text but that would be easy to render in HTML into the users webspace (using apache mod_userdir). the desktp could then display the html directly from the webserver.
not sure how to do in realtime.
