Web casting/video conferencing
Have been asked to provide web/video conferencing between our school and one in France.
Assuming the use of a webcam, microphone and the internet does anyone know of suitable software that could be used besides MSN, which is not secure?
Secondly if anyone has experience of doing this how was it achieved, what problems had to be overcome etc
We run windows 2000/2003 servers, XP clients, teeny bit of Linux in UK. BGFL provide our gateway to the internet. Currently do no know what platform is in use in France or if they have public or private web access.
Any ideas gladly received.
Thanks

Sign up for the schools video conferencing service:
http://www.jvcs.ja.net/schools/
lots of tech info here:
http://www.jvcs.ja.net/
They have a good booking facility and will help deal with techincal problems.
I advice getting a decent dedicated unit, somthing like a polycom, but anything that supports SIP or H.323 will work - but not as well if you need to VC lots of users. Ekiga is free: http://www.ekiga.org/

Bebo, Can you PM me. I can point you in the right direction as regards VC on the BGfL.

Also check if your RBC offers this facility... some, e.g. CLEO, have a gatekeeper that will route your schools through NEN.
I would concur that 'proper' hardware is a must for serious usage (e.g. in a classroom).

You mean this now works outside of BGFL too?
babo will confirm this - but I think the reason for using a web type link was because the French school does not have video conferencing as we have. I'm sure she will be in touch though
On the same subject - has anyone ever tried using Netmeeting to connect to other schools, especially French schools?

Alan, In a word yes you can. I suggest that you have a look here. There is another way using IP, but you know issue with that as regards the internet proper!
