Hi looking to move to a fully gpo environment, we currently use ranger for networks. Does anybody have a starter gpo for school locked down template? XP Pro Windows 7 computers.
Thanks

Thanks for the reply.
Student lock down ie no control panel, desktop wallpaper change etc etc. For Staff a little more lenient.
Ranger has a nice easy to use front end that has some gpo configured and templates.
Thanks

2nd November 2010, 09:24 PM #4 ok, well which version of server are you running, from the sounds of it you are running 2003 as I havent heard of Ranger working on 2008 (nor R2)...if you are planning on diong W7 GPO's, you are going to need to get Server 2008 R2 for the GPOs to apply properly.

I would advise on creating your own from scratch, at least then you will know your own network (Group Policies) inside out....its good for understanding and troubleshooting problems that might arise.

You need to think about what ranger does for you and what you need to replace. Website monitoring for instance doens't come for free. other thing you need to consider is that each machine will need to be rebuilt from scratch, ranger doens't just uninstall!.

Squid proxy setup for NTLM authentication to log traffic by user name, and SARG for parsing the traffic logs/formatting it into a nice to navigate web page. Both are in the Ubuntu repositories. I'm running this setup currently for student and staff traffic logging. If you don't have a basic knowledge of a Linux command line though, this might not be for you.
