I've got a site with the following setup
Admin Domain - 2 Servers (Win2K3 - DC, Win2K - Exchange 2K)
Curric Domain - 1 Server (Win2K3 - DC)
It's a single forest running at Windows 2000 functional level
Both domains are at Windows 2000 functional level
I now want to set up a Recipient Update Service on the admin Exchange box to update users accounts on the curric box. I've tried to DomainPrep the curric domain (from an Exch 2K SP3 file set) but I get an error about Exchange 2000 not working on Windows 2003. I have the option to continue but dare not do so unless I know it will work.
Help ??!?

Can you not upgrade the exchange server first to w2k3 and then exchange 2003? I would have thought that to be the best option....

Would that work? If Exch2K is not compatible with Win2K3, then surely upgrading the server to 2K3 would kill the server? I could migrate Exchange off to the Admin DC (a Dell 2900 with Xeon 5110 and plenty of RAM) then upgrade the Exch box to 2K3 then migrate it back I suppose.

Apologies - meant to write upgrade exchange first then windows... it apparantly works that way..

Re: Exchange 2000: RUS for a Win2K3 DC
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810591 any help?
you can run setup /forestprep & (presumably) setup /domainprerp on the 2003 DCs fine. It's just having exchange itself installed on w2k3 that causes problems.
nb: never tried it. Personally, I'd probably bring up a windows 2000 member server in the relevant domain to do what I want, then uninstall it afterwards.

Thanks for the replies. I think we'll probably migrate to Exch 2003.... but not today!

Hi,
Probably worth looking at Exchange 2007, if you gonna do an exchange installation. Yes it does need 64bit server but you will be most up to date and shouldn't have to upgrade the mail solution for a while.
The CALs are not badly priced as well.
Ash.

@ashok: Steve from Novus was telling us about Exchange 2007 at BETT. His advice was to hang back for now since it is majorly different... AD integration is all wierd too - no more right-clicking in Users and Computers!
