I see a few people mentioned NAV taking up a lot of resources, and up to version 5 that was true. The last few versions of SAV sit happily and quietly on a machine doing their job. No more is there a default of a complete system scan on each bootup as there was with version 5

I use AVG Pro myself as it's low on resources and pretty good. We use Symantec Corp. here, and it does a pretty good job. NOD32 is a nice little up-and-comer, Sophos tends to get a bad press, but is no better or worse than most.

I agree with the comment about Sophos support, I've called them and they were very good.
I know how to hide the whole of the system tray, so that the icons can't be disabled, but that wouldn't tell me when a machine was infected!
I'd love to be able to hide VNC though, I remember doing it at another school ages ago, but I've forgotten; if anyone could remind me please......

Your Sophos server install should tell you! There's no need to go looking. It does sound like there are quite a few Sophos network installs not working quite as they should.
