Is it worth installing .Net Framework 2.0

Unlike .net 1.1 which has a substantial software base, 2.0 hasn't had that much time to gather momentum before 3.0 came out.

Is it safe to skip 2.0 and go straight to 3.0 unless you're unlucky enough to be lumbered with an app that is tightly bound to 2.0

Theres no harm in having all three really. All they do is eat a little disk space.

Either that or install it as you need it. I do have a couple of .net 2.0 apps so I generally install it.

The web searches I had done seemed to imply that 2.0 was a subset of 3.0 which was really something called WinFX. I just was just hoping that this meant that I could skip 2.0 altogether.

    Well bang goes that theory

Main reason I installed .net 2.0 was for paint.net :P

That's interesting. .NET versions are supposed to sit along side each other and not interfere. Did you find out what happened?

Not really. 1.1 put up a fight and I finally managed to remove it and re-install.

My machine was one of a handful that had problems upgrading to 2.0. there was nothing you could put your finger on as a cause.

I deploy .NET 1.1 and .NET 2.0 via GP software installation on all curriculum PCs. No problems AFAIK

If you're running SIMS.net it appears you have no option but to install both before August. Capita are moving the SIMS DB to SQL Server 2005/Express and need both frameworks for that it would appear.

Re: Is it worth installing .Net Framework 2.0

We've had some problems in SIMS.net on computers that didn't have 1.1 and 2.0 installed. Best to go for the whole shebang probably.

When I installed .net 3.0 on a computer with 1.1 and 2.0 already on, the c: drive ended up with about 185MB less space.

Funny this should come up - I've just finished re-imaging our ICT set of PCs and part of it was to install the latest ver of .net, along with IE7, and all the other usual updates....

I stuck all three on and its not caused a problem.......................yet.

I've also got 1.1 and 2.0 in my RIS image (again for Paint.Net), and if 3.0 doesn't muck up my test machine I'll deploy it next week.
