but pictures of a certain nature in the sample pictures folder which is a direct link to the c: drive of each machine in the all users folders of documents and settings. we have had a look in gpo but cant see anything that will turn it of or get rid of the sample pictures folder. it is also the same with sample music, so it wont be long before they start placing music files in their. Anyone any ideas please!!!!!!!!

Re: Students using my sample pictures shortcut to
By going up a few levels, other Programs can sometimes be used which aren't normally accessible.

got a similar problem but iwth the "All Programs" in the start menu
Have disabled Right Click & Context Menu everywhere (Start Menu, Desktop, Explorer, etc...) except - they can right click on "All Programs" and get up the UNC path of the Start Menu, and all the other PC's and shares on the network, despite removing Net Places, hiding C Drive, et al..

have already got C: drive locked and hidden from students this seems to be like a little back door that gets around policys in place, and other than deleting sample pictures of ever since computer i was hoping for an easier way.

Did anyone ever resolve this as I'm having the same problem with the pictures folders & really need to remove it. I cant find anywhere in GP that redirects these folders.
Thanks

probably not an amazing solution, but if its the sample pictures folder on a mapped home drive (redirected my docs etc), how about adding a line in the logon script with something like:
if exist "x:\my documents\my pictures\sample pics" del "x:\my documents\my pictures\sample pics"
i dunno, i'm drainbead right now :?

The sample pic shortcut keeps getting recreated, We took the approach of blocking all .url files using spaceguard and running a script to delete all existing .url in user areas to catch the ones already created.
Oh yes, to prevent other breaches, shortcuts/executables/etc can only be launched from certain locations, so bringing in shortcuts on memory sticks/cds won't help them.

surely it would only be recreated on logon or logoff? so if you had that line run at logon and logoff?
is it a redirected my docs folder, because dont you have the option of redirecting my pictures too? i cant remember off hand but if you do, point all of them to a single my pictures folder that is empty

Re: Students using my sample pictures shortcut to
Have you tried a line in a startup script for the machines that reads something like:
echo y| cacls "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Pictures\Sample Pictures" /e /t /d <DOMAIN>\<students group>
This denies students access to the folder by NTFS permissions and should result in an 'Access Denied' message if they click on it. The 'echo y| ' at the front pipes the 'y' to the cacls command that it needs in a script.
