    Speed up LAN webmail access

Internet (Aaargh!!) very slow here at the moment - our microwave dish has blown out of alignment and the wind is too strong for the contractors to get up there and sort it.

We use webmail - squirrel pointing to a box on our LAN

Can I add entries into the local hosts file to speed up connection to our LAN webmail??

    Cheers

Am I to assume then your DNS server is on another site?

Is the slowness a new 'feature' of the system?
IIRC localhosts files are recomended for squirrel (its been a while since I used it) - also you may want to look at using a cacheing IMAP proxy on the squirrelmail box for extra speed.

@Chris: We have DNS running on the DC - that points to the central DNS in County Hall - down the slow link

@CyberNerd: Thanks for those. Can't find much info to help at the moment

Re: Speed up LAN webmail access

The way that I have things set up for our school is that I have created a new forward lookup zone in the dns server of the name of the domain (in my case 'mineheadmiddle.somerset.sch.uk') and added an A record to point to the box with our site on (so we have a record which is for www to point to 10.5.x.x). This way our internal clients are fed the ip of the local machine rather than having to find it out from an external dns server. It doesn't affect the external visitors to it either.

    Hope this helps

Thanks localzuk - someone just suggested that here - seems to be working well now.
