Hi
What is the most that a teacher should have in their home folders...
As I have 1 Staff Member thats on 8gb. thats a media teacher before they have even started downloading video from the Camcorders.. (sorta dumped his entire last school onto the server)
And I have the Maths Department 5 users on 5gb Each.....
Is this taking the Mick or is this normal ?

Thats large! Do these teachers not have shared departmental areas for them to share resources, handbooks etc? Most i've had is a couple of Gb, but that was only because they didn't have a departmental shared area. You mention camcorder stuff, I wouldn't put it on a network server as its not the best performance from there, you want it on a local machine, designate one for the job and make a folder that the member of staff can access only on that machine and use that for it.

Can they not store to the local machine? Or have a dedicated computer? It will be much quicker for the teachers - particularly dumping camcorder video. I would imagine that getting all that data across your network was slowing everything up.
With the other teachers your should ask them to clean up - no one needs 5gb of work. You'll probably find a bunch of music

Thanks for the tip about local storage.....
The problem is that the teachers are dumping Program CD's like Exam Wizard onto their own space... and then giving it to thier mates to do the same...
How would I be able to get a few students to access the local store if a class of 20 need to edit thier Camcorder dumps ?

Assuming your using Windows stuff, I would make a security group called Media Group, add into that all the students /staff in question, and assign that folder on that PC in question full control to the newly created Media Group.

Then I would I have to edit the logon bat file to map the folder ?

Just as an example of high usage, my other half has scanned all her reference work in terms of worksheets, revision guides, and the like into PDF format.
8 large storage boxes of files and folders has been condensed down onto a 2Gb memory stick although she is looking to get another one soon as she's now taking on a vocational subject now too. So in some instances a high quota may be required but I expect she's very much an exception rather than the rule... Not many teachers digitise their work in this way.

I really hope you have a backup!

That's the way that I'd do it. I'd still be trying to steer away from anything to do with the network when you've got huge files. It's slow for everyone.

Oh you better believe it...
Home system, laptop, DVD, etc... Been there and done that once already :P
I guess you do sort of point to the fact that she does need to have local access to these files at school though so there is a valid argument for someone like this having a high storage space quota. No teacher really wants to have to rely on a USB stick completely Murphy being alive and well!

Ta...I think I'll buy 5 laptops for media and they can play on them :-) as somesaid above it will affect the network traffic
