happy new year guys and gals,
first day back and already running into issues with majority of my pc's not wanting to log off when logged in as students or staff. i thought it could of been a group policy issue but havin checked through it i can't seem to find anything.
all machines running xp sp2 ie7 fully updated.
servers all running 2k3 r2.
what seems to be happening is that it isn't recognising any commands from the shutdown menu at all and just goes back to the windows desktop after 1 option is selected.
Many Thanks
Kris Dickinson
That sounds like something that spyware/virus might do... you chould try running a ad-aware and AV scan on one of the affected machines., see if you get anything.
or a broken windows update or msi deployment.
the only thing that i've found that looks even similar is http://support.microsoft.com/kb/831431
but seems as i don't have norton av then i dont think this really applies i'll look into the windows update issue etc...
thanks for the idea's
Kris
It's the Windows update. You need to shutdown which will install the updates then you will be able to restart.
The Thing is it responds to remote log off, restart and shutdown requests which is the one thing that is confusing me.
It'll be the explorer shell restricting it, rather than the underlying system then.
How many computers is this affecting?
its intermittent sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't its so frustrating nothing to explain it either. on all 160.

Are you able to log off the machines when logged in as an unrestricted user (e.g. local admin)? If so, it would point to a GPO preventing logoff.
it does log off locally. i've looked and looked through all the gpo's and my brain has finally given up along with the 101 printer issues i've had today.
this has officially got to be the worse ever day of work!
cheers
Kris

You may need to recreate your GPOs, switching stuff back on one item at a time.Originally Posted by krisd32
