    Hardware Support Contracts

    hardware support contarcts for w/s

what do people do do they have them or not and if do have them how much do you pay per w/s

Currently looking at rm w/s support contracts and deciding if viable or not and if can get better deal elsewhere..

We have informed rm that we are thinking this so that if they can lower hardware support contracts then great...

We just buy kit that has a next day on site support warranty.

For all else we do ourselves.

Support contracts are the biggest waste of money ever. Final.
Why spent 7k+ when you only ever spend £1500 on spares each year? They are the first thing I recommend that schools abandon when I encounter them, especially as most schools have a technician capable of doing any repairs.

Agreed - don't see the need for that - what about software support - we have that - pay £1k per year as fallback [as there's only me] - plus it's just something i've kept from before I started - I can wangle training etc out of it.

I agree - you get 12 months warranty on new kit anyway - if it goes after that it's cheaper to get the parts and fit them yourself.

Having said that - we do have hardware maint contracts on the Servers (via Teksys at the mo) as we found it was quicker for them to obtain the parts and fix them.

Maybe that's your answer - only get a contract on the essential kit.

I purchase almost exclusivly dell kit and get 3 year next days on all of it, so far its been worth its weight in gold, no quibbles and real quick handling of issues, doesnt pump the price up too badly either.

Yep we are exactly the same as this. Do all the repairs ourselves when out of warranty.

    Re: Hardware Support Contracts

Funnily enough, I got a letter from the povvits at RM today asking me to renew my support contract on some desktops (@£45 each!).

I didn't know that this contract even existed and I can only think that it is a remnant from the network manager of 2 incarnations previous - who sold his soul to the devil and had a great love of RM.

I duely rang RM and told them where to put the contract.

I also have a very good suplier who can get me 2nd user kit (usually still under manufacturer warranty) that has come out of offices, etc. I just bought 42 thin client terminals for £75 each. HP/Dell/Fujitsu desktops come in at well under £300 with TFT monitors... There's just no point!

Chuck them in the bin or flog them to stupid staff / students, not worth your time.

    Re: Hardware Support Contracts

We dont take workstation support contracts here.
Just replaced 170~ machines with 4 year warrenty with fujitsu siemens with next day turnaround.
Last year we had about 5-10 spares (maybe they were removed when faulty and turned into spares) which we canabolised for the spares up until the summer - 'mount cardboard' and 'mount polystyrene' were created.

For the Servers (5 supported, 2 unsupported) I think the fee is somewhere between 1-3k a year for any problems/issues that developes on them (hardware or software) with next day call out. I think this contract also covers anyproblems/changes associated with our comms cabinets.
Some might see it a waste of money, but when your 'technical support' includes ANYTHING thats to do technology, rather than workstations/servers/logon, you become in huge demand and its nice to have someone come in and take the pressure off.

Well there has to be a trade off somewhere Frazer [welcome BTW ] - minimal personnel = greater outsourcing.

For my bulk orders I negotiated set up on desk and removal of packaging into the deal :P hehe!

I do the same thing for support - what area of the UK do you work? - I'm looking to change support contractor.

Slowly branching over here from another forum that was setup by DB for the lancashire schools.
Hodgson High School - Blackpool/Poulton (Northwest)

http://www.azzurricommunications.com/ is the people we use. If you cant find what you want from ther I can get our accounts manager to give you a call (or the relevant manager from your area)?
You were lucky getting unpacking and setting up with the deal! I never thought to try asking for that, management just assumed we would get on with it :/ (theres 3 of us)

    Re: Hardware Support Contracts

Thanks for that Frazer - i'll give them a call

Depends on how much time you have to spare / how much you pay your techies I suppose. Here there's just me - and they waste my time enough without paying my to shift rubbish too. It just ioccurred to me when ordering 70 PC's - the logistics of it all!
