This is the 2nd time this has happened now, on server 2003.
It always occurs after I have finished updating the server and have included IE7 in those updates. Uninstalling IE7 makes no difference though.
Im not 100% its IE's fault but if I dont include that update it doesnt do this
The message is: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item"
Appears when you try to access any .EXE on a network drive, yet even if I copy the exe to a local disk the same thing occurs.
Obviously I do have permissions, Im using a domain admin account which is fine on all other servers and fine until the updates
Anything already installed is fine, almost like I have an allowed applications list and anything else cannot execute - is there anything like that in a recent update?
Anyone else experiance it and know a way to fix it rather than formatting and re-installing?

* Run the Registry Editor , then navigate to the following key:
Code:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ exefile \ shell \ open \ command
* Edit the (default) value. Delete the current value data, and then type:
(ie., quote-percent-one-quote-space-percent-asterisk.)
* Navigate to:
Code:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe
* Set (default) to exefile
* Reboot.

Thanks, but that value was already set, as was the default
Have found a temporary way round it for now.
If I copy the exe I want to run to a local drive, then go to properties, and click unblock on the option "This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer" - it will run
However clicking unblock on a network exe doesnt change anything

Oh right, I know what that is. Disable IE 'Enhanced Security Configuration'.

Thanks, that worked
Why has it suddenly started doing that though? Is it because of IE7?
Because its enabled on all my servers and have never seen the problem before

Well the first thing I do on my W2k3 servers is disable it then install Firefox with IETab. So I've never seen this.
I guess there's just some incompatibility.
