Is this one user or a whole domain?

If the second then I think there is an option to forward to smart host. Can't recall the specifics at the moment but hopefully that might jog someone's memory.

For an individual user, this can be done though active directory as follows.

Create a contact with the email address you need to forward to. On the Exchange General tab of the user, select delivery options and add the contact as the forwarding address.

You can specify if mail is sent to both mailboxes or just forwarded.

    Job done!

The solution I provided is not an "internal thing". The contact you create in active directory can have any external email address you like.

This is the standard way of forwarding email using an exchange server.

    Trust me this will work.

so presumably shs.com is hosted externally? Who by? Do they have any mail control panel you can access? Most external hosting providers I have used (The exception being my RBC!) have cPanel. Which will allow you to setup this kind of mail forwarding very easily.

Re: Forward mail to an external domain in exchange 2003

Tim, can you clarify the situation!

From what you are saying shs.com is your DNS domain name and the exchange server has an smtp connector soemthing like mail.shs.com

If this is the case then each mail enabled user in the active directory has an email address of username@shs.com

To forward mail to username@sherburnhigh.sch.uk you need to create a contact in active directory for the forwarding address as follows.

    Create a new contact
    Give it a meaninigful name
Leave the create exchange email address selected
Click modify to add an email address (This is where you specify the external email address)
Choose SMTP address and add the address username@sherburnhigh.sch.uk
    Click finish

Now in active directory, choose the exchange general tab of the user you want to forward mail for, seleced dilivery options and add the contact you just created in here.

When email hits either username@shs.com or contactalias@shs.com mail will be forwarded to username@sherburnhigh.sch.uk

Re: Forward mail to an external domain in exchange 2003

You've got it backwards. shs.com is his externally hosted domain provided by a 3rd party. sherburnhigh.sch.uk is the domain that maps to his schools domain and thus his LEA. As he stated in his original posts he has direct control over the mail server running either domain.

Which one is outside your domain?

To be honest though this is irrelevant though as the original post was about forwarding email on an exchange server.

Re: Forward mail to an external domain in exchange 2003

There are some situations where an Exchnage server collects email for two domains and then fowards the email to a subsiduary domain, hence my reply.

If both domains are serviced using push SMTP then Geoffs solution is probably more elegant.

Re: Forward mail to an external domain in exchange 2003

I am sure what Tim was asking about was simply forwarding email from a mailbox on an exchange server to an external email address.

Perhaps you can clarify this for us Tim.

Re: Forward mail to an external domain in exchange 2003

Aye, djm seems to have the right idea, cheers, ill try that but just clarify something for me,
    create a new account... done
but i dont understand this is where you specify the external email address... why would i want to do that, i dont understand... say you send an email to joebloggs@shs.com, i want that message to be delivered to fred@sherburnhigh.sch.uk, surely its just a forwarder??
but to the others, shs.com is internal and sherburnhigh.sch.uk is external hosted by the LEA.

    Thanks

No worries, its is a bit of a hammer to crack a nut solution but AFAIK this is the correct way to do it.

This link has a good step by step guide
