Hey all, new guy here with a rather odd problem.
I have one user who can't get to any secure web sites (https) with IE6 - it simply comes up with 'Page cannot be displayed'. I've had a look online, and found many suggestions including unregistering/re-registering a bunch of DLLs, scanning for spyware (none found), deleting his local profile (we use roaming ones) and checking his Advanced IE settings are correct (they are).
This problem only seems to affect him, no matter what machine he uses. Other people using his machine are just fine. I attempted to reinstall IE6, but the installer (downloaded fresh from microsoft.com) said the version already present was newer.
An interesting thing is if I go into Internet Options > Content > Certificates and try to open any certificate, it says "A system-level error occurred while verifying trust".
He's using Windows XP, IE6 (6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519), and the network runs on Windows Server 2003. Any ideas? This is driving me mad! :P
It'll be a profile setting somewhere probably. Does he have a roaming profile? Try removing it.
If you are using roaming profiles, still check his local machine for cached copies of the profile... they may be there.. i've had issues with XP doing this.
or, you could try rebuilding his roaming profile. I know that doesn't tell you what was wrong in the first place, but might fix it.
I had a problem where people got that. When I say people I mean anyone who wasn't an Administrator.
Tried everything, profiles, the lot, turned out running Windows XP Setup and repairing the image installation fixed it.
Don't think that's the same problem as you're having though.
If it's only your one user can you not just create him a new account?
Thanks for the swift replies! I'll have a go at rebuilding his profile tonight. If that doesn't work, then I may have to take mrforgetful's advice and just recreate him from scratch. I'll let you know the outcome.
Ah, I had this problem last week, In active directory GPO redirect the Application Data to the users homefolder under appdate
\\FILESERVER\%USERNAME%\application data
Problem solved with one relogin
Try deleting his 'NTuser.dat' file from his profile - we find this usually solves odd little problems like this - it wont do any harm and may save you a lot of time.
Excellent! Rebuilding his profile worked a treat. Thanks for all your help![]()
