403 - Forbidden: Access is denied. Win XP Updates

403 - Forbidden: Access is denied.
You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials that you supplied.

This morning I have tried running Windows XP Update on 3 computers - one networked the other 2 workgrouped and have received a message telling me "403 - Forbidden: Access is denied. You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials that you supplied." I'm logged on with Admin powers. Last succesfully ran updates yesterday evening on other computers in the school. Nothing has changed on our system overnight (MS Server 2003 R2) running with an Espresso Linux Server Cache.

Moving on - several years ago a techy lass (sorry can't remember who) gave me a very handy little BAT file

    net.exe stop wuauserv
    cd /d %windir%
    rd /s softwaredistribution
    REGSVR32 %windir%\system32\wuapi.dll
    REGSVR32 %windir%\system32\wuaueng1.dll
    REGSVR32 %windir%\system32\wuaueng.dll
    REGSVR32 %windir%\system32\wucltui.dll
    REGSVR32 %windir%\system32\wups.dll
    net.exe start wuauserv

Running that on my affected machines today then doing a restart brought Windows Updates access back to life again.

I hope it works for others.

    Getting error 403 as well

Tried a Windows update at home this morning and got:-

403 - Forbidden: Access is denied. You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials that you supplied. Thought I had a virus or malware stopping me updating.

Got into to school and guess what I got the same. Funny Windows update worked last night.

Looks like we have to wait for Microsoft.

If this error is reported in WindowsUpdate.log FATAL: Update required for C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuweb.dll: target version = 7.2.6001.788, required version = 7.4.7600.226, re-install the relevant file from here : How to obtain the latest version of the Windows Update Agent to help manage updates on a computer.

That's odd as I've updated several machines this morning with no issues at all.

Windows Update still not working for me! 403 error

This looks like another strange microsoft problem.

On every PC in the school that I have tried I get: 403 - Forbidden: Access is denied.
You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials that you supplied

My windows update log file says: -

FATAL: Update required for C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuweb.dll: target version = 7.2.6001.788, required version = 7.4.7600.226
    2009-12-11 14:43:39:181 3436 a90 Setup * IsUpdateRequired = Yes

Now why is a different version required today compared to yesterday and even if it is required why does windows update not update it. What has changed?

Solved this now. I visited the site
How to obtain the latest version of the Windows Update Agent to help manage updates on a computer
Downloaded and installed new windows update agent. (Not through windows update!). It now works fine. Looks like I will have to do it for all 120 computers in the school! Thanks Microsoft.

That bat file with a reboot (I posted earlier):

    net.exe stop wuauserv
    cd /d %windir%
    rd /s softwaredistribution
    REGSVR32 %windir%\system32\wuapi.dll
    REGSVR32 %windir%\system32\wuaueng1.dll
    REGSVR32 %windir%\system32\wuaueng.dll
    REGSVR32 %windir%\system32\wucltui.dll
    REGSVR32 %windir%\system32\wups.dll
    net.exe start wuauserv

works fine for me anyone else tried it?

Was reported on Sans as well: Microsoft Update providing 403 error code?

You guys really need to set up WSUS - it's a half-hour job at the most.

    Thanks Pete,

I stuck WSUS on one server but gave up when it presented such a huge array of options to chose. I just wanted Critical and Security updates for Server 2003 and XP Pro workstations - preferably to automatically apply. Is there a muppet guide you can point the likes of me toward please?
