Hi
I am trying to work out which version of ghost I will need to be able to image new workstations over the network. Also where is the best place to order the correct version of ghost.
Thanks

You need the Ghost Solution Suite (AKA Ghost Corporate Edition). The last lot of licences I got for it were from Ramesys at about £9 per licence.
/edit Just checked their website. they're going for £11.50/licence. However give them a call, they will probably be able to do better.
Using Ghost 8 Corp edition here. You might also want to consider using RIS though.

How about:

£9 - £10 seems steep !
How about RIS?![]()
The question was not answered in the other Ghost thread so i'll ask again here... 8)
In the old old Ghost we used floppy disks that booted the PC (from BSOD or totally dead) and it went into Ghost and you could PICK what Image was to be loaded..
Ie
Compaq
Dell
Centerprise
choose the image and it loaded..
No Multicast or Ghostcast had to be started and the selected image loaded to ghost a PC..
Now in this new Ghost how is this done as if the PC is dead then there is no OS so the client isn't loaded
Can it be done in Ghost 7 and above ?
Yes, you just ignore the ghost console and use the boot floppy wizard + ghostcast server driectly.
Clever people use PXE booting instead of a floppy/CD. However I have a lot of machines that don't do PXE, so it's not worth the hassle to sort out for me.

@Grommit: You should find that the dos-based Ghost tools do come with Ghost Corporate. You can even adapt the RIS boot menu so that you can PXE boot to that and select the image from there. You should find full instructions in the manual (something about 3COM tools).
I no longer use Ghost but when I did (Corporate 8 IIRC) I regularly had to boot using disks... PITA it wasRIS all the way now

I've used that method grommit with vs 7 & 8 - I booted from a UBCD and logged onto a server containing the images.
RIS + ghost is slicker - like Ric_ says - very simple to set up too.
Anyone trid RIS's successor yet (Desktop Deploment is it?)
Can existing RIS images be used with it?
Yes existing RIS images can be used with WDS, if you install WDS on an existing RIS server that has at least one image on it WDS is installed as mixed mode. When you get the WDS boot menu there is an option for RIS images and it takes you to the old style RIS boot menu. I had a really quick play with this a month ago and I am going to have a look at it a bit this week.

I've read a lot into it, but until I get a full backup of my RIS box that can be easily recovered IE a ghost to a spare HDD, I am not upgrading to WDS to play yet....
Ok RIS... now whan i was doing my MCSE courses the unattend.txt file always failed and never put the key in...Originally Posted by mark
Has this issue been sorted as it was basically and XP build with the loaction, Key etc still to be loaded after the image has been loaded..
Then there was the SysPrep to get the programs on saga... ZZzzzzzzzzzz (or am I wrong)
With Ghost it was just build, Newsid and go
Does RIS just install the OS and No applications ??
And how would one use RIS and Ghost ?
