Windows Media Player 11 log on/ log off problem
Hi All,
We have had a problem recently where members of staff cannot open windows media player 11. It says that they should log off and on again before starting media player. Admins can open the software with no problem.
The only workaround at the moment has been to uninstall 11 and then use 10. Which is not the way forward.
Has anyone seen this / know how to resolve it.
Many Thanks
Skeep

3rd November 2009, 10:14 AM #2 we had this on a few machines at our school,
i still not have fixed the problem but it started to work on a few machines, i think its to do either with hardware and/or profiles
what i have done so far is...
re-installed MP11 - Didn't work
created new profiles - worked on most machines (HP) but didn't work on RM machines
hope this helps

Thanks for the reply.
It is very starnge and we have all dell computers. The one it is happening on today is a brand new PC with a brand new user and still the same problem. Searching on the web shows loads of people with this problem but no resolution.
Very odd!

3rd November 2009, 12:32 PM #6 We had this right after the machines were ghosted with WDS.
I found re-installing WMP11 after joining to domain sorted things.

Easiest way to check is to have a look at a profile and see if NTUSER ends in .DAT or .MAN.

5th November 2009, 10:07 AM #8 To use Windows Media Player, log off etc...
Hi everyone,
I am having the same problem with WMP11. I have tried all the above with no success. I am using mandatory profiles on the network and will try creating a new profile and see how that goes, keep you posted.

9th November 2009, 02:21 PM #10 I have created a new profile for a test user and it still doesn't work. Even unintalling/reinstalling doesn't work either.

9th November 2009, 03:01 PM #12 im in the middle of doing a fresh install of xp, puttin MP11 on, then installing updates one at a time and trying to see if this is the problem and if so wich update is causing this.
don't think this will work thought as im using wsus and all computers have the same updates and its only affecting some, but hey im clutching at straws here and if it works ill just clone the machine

I managed to get 11 working on one.
I removed 11 restarted, then removed 11 runtime, then downloaded 11 and reinstalled.
Now Works!!!!
Now I have to do that on about 20 other computers!!!

ok after my last post it has stopped working again, so here is the extensive testing I have done this afternoon, maybe it will help try to resolve the problem:
Unistalled wmp11 and wmp11 runtime and reinstalled wmp11
logged on as admin (worked), user1 (worked), user2 (broke), logged in user1 (worked), restarted did not work for anyone.
Unistalled wmp11 and wmp11 runtime and reinstalled wmp11
logged on as admin (worked), user1 (worked), user2 (worked)
restarted
logged on as user2 (worked), admin (broke)
Unistalled wmp11 and wmp11 runtime and reinstalled wmp11
run as local admin (worked) user2 (worked) admin (worked)
restarted
run as user2 (worked) run as admin (broke), run as local admin (worked)
Unistalled wmp11 and wmp11 runtime and left wmp10 working!!
As you can see from above I cannot see a pattern and this has to be the most random problem I have ever come across in the 10 years I have been in the IT support sector!!!!

12th November 2009, 01:11 PM #15 I have uninstalled each WMP update in turn to try and see if one of the updates was causing the problem, but WMP wouldn't work at each stage.
