Quick one.
I've a sick (says unmountable_boot_volume) computer in a staff room.
Machine works and I can Knoppix it to get the files off but I thought I'd try giving it a kicking with the recovery console (not that that's ever worked for me before but never mind).
However, something in the back of mind says it might have been a W2000 machines.
How can I tell by looking at the files on the hard drive from Knoppix?
regards
Simon

Generally speaking
Windows 2000 installs in the WINNT directory. Windows XP installs in the WINDOWS directory.

Re: How to tell WinXP from W2000
Look in C:\Boot.ini (or probably /media/hda1/boot.ini on Knoppix) there is normally a line or two about the operating systems that are running on the computer.
Also if you have Movie Maker and MSN Gaming Zone in the Progrma Files folder then its probably XP
