I have a fix at work somewhere, I believe it involves 'reinstalling' the Windows Update stuff by running a few commands.

Will try and see if I still have it kicking around somewhere tomorrow

I'd be interested to see the fix because I had this same issue a while back, made a couple of changes to the registry as suggested by another site I found googling the issue and that part fixed it but something else wasn't working, can't remember what now.

I then did something else, might have been sfc but I can't remember now, but after whatever it was rebooting the machine then killed it with a missing system file so ended up just rebuilding it.

Make a batch file out of this and run it, if you can uninstall IE7 / IE8 first then do so, then reinstall it through updates

    echo off

ECHO This batch file will register the Windows Update files. Run this if updates are failing to install.

    PAUSE

    regsvr32 wuapi.dll
    regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
    regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
    regsvr32 wucltui.dll
    regsvr32 wups2.dll
    regsvr32 wups.dll
    regsvr32 wuweb.dll
Not 100% sure if this will fix the issue but I'm sure it did on the batch of machines we had with this problem!

    followed your instructions

    uninstalled ie7
    rebooted
    ie6 icon works fine
run the batch file to regeister mentioned items
    reinstalled ie7

    problem is back again

when i right click on the icon i get

    create shortcut
    delete
    rename
    properties

where has the open command gone.

url file association seems to be broken also

but it is fine under ie6

Quick Google, put this into a text file and save as a .reg file then run it

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

; This Reg fix will fix the Internet exporer's desktop icon.

I tried that first and it failed to rectify the problem

but i was clutching at straws so i did it again and it fixed the problem

    just to mention everyone

installing ie8 fixed the issue but i did notice that outlook web access asked for the username and password of the user which did not happen in ie6 or 7 but hey let me get this problem sorted out.

    Thankyou again

I did google the problem for hours and i did see the mentioned fix but it did not work first time i am going to test it on all the other machines and i will post my results.

BTW the icon changes back to the IE6 version (who cares) but i know some end users complain is anything is different

tested on three machines and it works perfectly

rest of the day fixing this

i need to test all the machines so i think i will do it manually.
