    Where'd'ee go???

Um - one of my servers has disappeared off my browse lists. I can ping it by name and number - all the software on it still works, my documents area is on it and IU can access that OK, it just doesn't show up in a list when you look - which is a bit irritating - especially when trying to change things in Backup Exec (and yes I know I could type in the selections).

Any ideas on how to make it reappear would be very gratefully received.

    Cheers

Alas, already done this - but no joy. Checked DNS - but that looks OK (from my little knowledge). Any other ideas??

I remeber there is a command somewhere to hide a windows server from the network browse options which would cause the symptoms you describe I'll have to look it up though!

    Okay the command would be:

    net config server /hidden:yes

to hide so I should think

net config server /hidden:no will bring it back?

    The registry entry would be:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\
    System\
    CurrentControlSet\
    Services\
    LanManServer\
    Parameters\
    Hidden

0 or 1, and then reboot.

Well cheers Wesley - after doing that - it was back - which is puzzling, as I'd already run net config server to check whether it was hidden - and it reported "No". Though I didn't actually try to reset it - though I did find some errors in the WINS stuff which I corrected. Hey ho - thanks a million guys - you're diamonds.

You only need WINS for 9x/NT4 clients. If you don't have any of those left you can safely remove WINS from your servers. 2k/2k3/XP use DNS exlusively.

I thought you still needed WINS to populate a browse list - certainly BackUp Exec didn't like not having WINS running???

Sophos used to get a bit grumbly about the lack of WINS too (or it did 2 years ago when I last used it ... and there are never any advances in IT ...erm .. IGMC)

Nope. Browse list will work quite happily without it.
