Anyone got any hints an tips for Domain rename?

In the summer I will be renaming the domain to reflect our external domain name change. I have read all the documentation and I am gearing up to do a test rename using a 2 virtual machines.
I am just looking for any tips off anyone thats done this already, regarding anything to look out for. It should be pretty straight forward for me as there is no Exchange installed (yet).

    Cheers

    Chris

Exchange died a horrible death when we did it here at Carr Hill. Other than that it was fairly painless.

Re: Anyone got any hints an tips for Domain rename?

It's a doddle on 2k3 server (inbuilt, part of the furniture, Start, Programs, Admin Tools, Rename my Domain)......sods law tells me you are only asking because you are not on 2k3.

If you are on 2k3 then try this as a double check http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserv...ainrename.mspx

If you are not on 2k3 and they have no backoffice apps on them (Exchange, SQL etc) then it may be a good opportunity to blow them away and upgrade them. (Renaming 2k domains is a bit of a finger-cross and dice roll of a double six to proceed. You may have to rebuild them anyway)

2k3 server is well worth the bit of extra effort in terms of functionality and an easier life!

Re: Anyone got any hints an tips for Domain rename?

Sorry Chris I was being flippant about the Start>Programs thing. It doesnt exist. Microsoft seem to have a 'wizard' for everything these days.

Follow the link in my previous post and work through the step by step guide on the right hand side of the page. (In fact read the 'How it works' doc first as this is a good indicator of the process involved and what to expect)

They are command line tools but they do work. Obviously a couple of good backups and a spare pair of pants goes without saying.

We have done it a couple of times on 2k3 (even with Exchange loaded) and it does work but take no chances with it as the reason I was being flippant is that it is quite an involved process made easy by a couple of command line tools. It was impossible on Win2k with AD, you had to rebuild the box.

    Sorry for the mislead....

I am sure you'll be fine, its all in the prep work and knowing whats on your box.

And as all of us good people are non-teaching staff, we will be in over the holiday anyway!

Re: Anyone got any hints an tips for Domain rename?

All done and dusted now . I did a test on a virtual PC setup first then went at the real thing. The only problem I had is it seemed to clear all the users logon script entry but I soon fixed that .
    Time for Exchange now.

Re: Anyone got any hints an tips for Domain rename?

When we renamed the domain at carrhill Exchange was very ill afterwards, we reinstalled. I also had to fix up samba on a couple of linux boxes but there was only a couple of changes to the smb.conf needed and a restart of samba.

Yes. There was stuff in the AD Schema and a very broken Exchange install on a W2k3 domain controller.
