So, I wanted all the new features of Windows Server 2003 R2, the Print Management and ability to stop kids saving certain file types in their areas.
We Currently use Enterprise.
I didn't think they'd go for buying 5 licences for that, at £272 each.
So I bought 5 Standard licences, at £250~ total.
Won't upgrade from Enterprise to Standard.
Ooops.
Does anyone know if it's possible that I can add an R2 server in somewhere and it will still let me use the Print Management stuff on my non-R2 machine?
I don't haev time this holiday to do a complete resetup of the network.

You will need to reinstall R2 to the boxen to "down / up"grade to the new package.... As far as Microsoft is concerned you can only go Ent - Ent and Std - Std. Now if there were to be a way around that..... Only google may know.
Also - I tried what you said about the printing and ... no
it installes new services to run the new print management and it doesnt work trying to convince it from another pc.
Other than costing new Ent licenses - there isnt any easy option... apart from a re build of the network

So there isn't an easy option lol
I really wanted these features too. I guess I'll have to try convince management to pay for the Enterprise licenses.
Wonder what I should do with these Standard ones.

To get the file type blocking I would have thought you'd need to have R2 on the server they are saving too but for the print management functions I'd guess you can just add an R2 server into your network.

You could try and convince management to spend the money on training.
SAMBA offers comprehensive file blocking tools and a CUPS print server is plenty featureful. This way you get FREE upgrades and only pay for training/support.
