I thought I would chime in on this thread. Our old server admin was a big fan of astronomy and named everything such. Server names after planetary bodies, domains were moonlight and sunshine and everything of the sorts. Time went by and he has long retired and left us, and over the years our server names have followed a more traditional naming convention Mailstore, Exchange, StuDom, Fac/StaffDom etc. The last of our "old servers" used to be the backup server for our payroll system, now converted into a Tech file storage share. Our current admin decided to keep the name as a nice tip of the hat to his predecessor (we just think he likes the name) Anyways it always gets a great laugh when somebody asks where a certain file is, "Its on Uranus!"

Why not - I name my servers to reflect the Job role starting with the first 3 letters of the school followed by a few letters of the job role - School name: Harrow / Server Role: Exchange (Server Name: Har-Exch) Personal preference on whoever is managing the network really, I like to keep it short.

Now I work in support and installation for a third party consultancy company I name client servers sensibly - internal we have some good names!

But I tend to either do Client Name appreviated to 3 letters - Role - Number or for the larger ones we do Site-Role-number.

Normally have site role and number or srv/ser role number works ok. Some places we gave them funny names and then created an A record with site role number which works ok too.

Best one I had recently at a site was Server.Domain.local exactly as that, their domain was domain. Have to laugh at some of them at times.

I recall a site (non education) that I was hired to clear up. The domain was called contoso.com.

My home PC is called localhost as is my netbook. Since I don't run them at the same time, it isn't a problem.

I inherited a server called Orac, the younger amongst you will probably have to Google that one!
I asked my 11 year old daughter what to name the new server and she christened it Jeeves, what a well educated child

Ages ago our mail servers were named after the spice girls... Then there was the IT director whose laptop was called Elvis and when he unplugged it sent an MSMessenger message to everyone in the IT dept that said "Elvis has left the building."
