System Nonpaged Pool Allocation
Our 2003 Server "Fileserver" - which runs nothing apart from Print Manager Plus, hosts all our files and has disk quotas - has randomly crashed about 5 times this week so far.
The error message in the event manager is:
ID 2019 - "The server was unable to allocate from the system nonpaged pool because the pool was empty."
Now, I've already increased the paging space once, but perhaps it isn't enough. Googling only brings up stories of memory leaks and specific software - none of which we have installed, and seems to make reference to Win 2k rather than 2003.
Any ideas... at the moment, only rebooting the fileserver seems to solve the problem. I could - theoretically - schedule a reboot every evening, but I shouldn't have to, and don't want to do that...
Cheers

We had to use poolmon to monitor the problem cant remember what it was now that caused our problem in the end

Re: System Nonpaged Pool Allocation
Hmm, allegedly it's enabled by default in 2003, but I don't seem to be able to see the option to open the console...
Server 2k3 disk time, methinks.

When problem appears run poolmon and save contents to notepad and then start looking through and using google to found out what program tag means.

Re: System Nonpaged Pool Allocation
Just installed the support tools on the server and am running poolmon now.
Problem I have is that it's usually overnight that these things happen, so it'll be very hard to track down.
Have also increased paging size as stab in the dark shot at providing extra resources - not sure that this will make much, if any, difference, mind.

Latest update to print manager plus installed? have you tried turning pmp off to see if it's that causing it? would mean you lose print quotas for the tmie being.

Re: System Nonpaged Pool Allocation
@ ZH: thanks - I've just read through that. We run Sophos not Norton here, but am looking at the memtriage program that's mentioned in that thread.

Re: System Nonpaged Pool Allocation
@ Ben
That's my next shot - to try PMP. We're running v5 and won't pay for the v6 upgrade, so I expect that this could be one of the problems........

PMP Maintenance is £125 P/A and that and our RADIUS server are the only pieces of software I have maintenance I think.

Re: System Nonpaged Pool Allocation
I know... but this place seems to refuse to pay for the logical purchases, but will happily while away cash on pointless tosh that'll end up costing even more money in the long run
(like iMate K-Jam phones on £35/mth Vodafone contracts... x 11... all out of the IT Budget..... tsk tsk)

Not using Norton or PMP (it runs on another server)

Basically, something is leaking memory. You just need to find out what.

Re: System Nonpaged Pool Allocation
I'm running the tools mentioned above, but the results make little sense to me...
It looks like nothing's leaking memory at the moment... (which would make sense - things are fine at the mo)
I guess I could monitor the Task Manager and look at the paged and nonpaged memory as well to see whether or not anything's ramped up really high by the end of the day...

Re: System Nonpaged Pool Allocation
Just an update on this, this morning I've had the same problem (it seems to be a problem that occurs every 48hrs), and the process tomcat5.exe, which is an Apache Java Web service (or something) appears to be the problem.
We're running IIS on that server (and Print Manager Plus), so I assume it's needed.
Anyone else heard of a similar problem before?
