backup has been working fine for ages, yet last night it failed, and trying to run anything this morning i get the message that the device is either paused, offline or disabled. nothing has changed, yet it now wont pick up the device at all. ive tried rebooting the tapestor, rebooting the server, it still comes on as offline. i can tick online for the device and it goes online in backup exec, but restart backup exec and its offline again.
i've read symantec forums with people saying after they updated xxxx it failed. but ive not done a thing, nothing has been touched yet its suddenly died!
any ideas?

i take it you have tried restarting all of the backupexec services? what is the status of the tape drive in device manager?
is it a sony tape drive you are using? i had a similar problem just before christmas on our sony tape unit. i had sony tapetool software and ran a number of diagnostic tests on it which found that the drive had stopped working
