    Keep them permissions!

So I've just recieved my Dell NAS server with Windows storage server 2003 on it :P

I now need to copy the files on the older server across to the NAS. Both servers are in the same domain of course. How do I make sure that all those files and folders keep their permissions? The microsoft site says use Xcopy. Surely there must be a better way than having to go to the Command prompt?

Any other options would be usefull!

Command prompt is definately your friend here. Try robocopy rather than xcopy it's supposed to be lot better.

If all does go a little tits-up, try this script I cobbled together (I moved data between domains so didn't have the luxury of such fanciful tools as xcopy).

The script assumes that the username and foldername are the same.

Thanks to ChrisH for his input too

@Mark_Wood: Welcome to the Dell NAS Club ;-)

I have just done what you are about to do, I needed to copy all user files and folders from our old PDC to the NAS server while still retaining the following:

    File Permissions
    Folder Permissions
    Shares & Share Permssions

I have the script back at the office and will post a copy of it up on Monday for you.

    Re: Keep them permissions!

As per DavidH above, use ROBOCOPY if you can. It will copy all your permissions with the files.

    Usage

    ROBOCOPY <source> <dest> /E /COPYATS /R:3

    eg ROBOCOPY c:\apps x:\apps /E /COPYATS /R:3

the /E makes sure that all folders including empty ones gets copied.

the /COPYATS makes sure that permissions get copied.

the /R:3 sets the retry count to 3 (default is 1 million!!)

Test it out, it works a treat!!

    Regards,

    Bubba.
