17th January 2009, 06:55 PM #1 Which FREE AV for WIN ME?
Doing a job for a friend - unbu@@ering his daughter's PC.
Reinstalling the original OS - Windows ME - after she put a dodgy copy of Win XP on it and her Dad doesn't want to spend any money so hence ME going back on.
Question is what AV? Has to be free but the latest and greatest version of AVG is for XP & Vista only.
Same regarding Firewall. Any advice?
This is like going back in time. I'd forgotten what a pile of poo ME was.

17th January 2009, 06:59 PM #2 Avast still has support for Windows 98SE/ME.
Tried and Trusted With over 60 million users of avast!, you can rest assured that you are using one of the most tried and trusted products in Windows security. We support more Windows versions (from Windows 95 to Vista 64bit) than any other anti-malware product. No matter what system you have, avast! has it covered.
As for firewall, I'm not sure yet, still looking.

17th January 2009, 07:13 PM #5 A friends ME computer has something called Protect Plus or Protector Plus on it? - she hasn't had any problems that I know of (except of course for ME itself!).
Otherwise I have heard reasonable things about Avast
NB: have googled it and it doesn't appear to be free now

17th January 2009, 07:15 PM #6 Seems Firewalls for 9x/ME are even more rare than AV.
I found Kerio to be supporting it downloadable from here.
Can't vouch for much else though...

17th January 2009, 07:19 PM #7 You could try Tiny Personal Firewall
Download Tiny Personal Firewall, Tiny Personal Firewall 2.0.14 Download
It says 98 / NT - if my memory was correct the kernal for ME was VERY similar to NT so it may work....

AVG up to 7.5 inclusive will support 98SE, but updates are supposedly stopping in August this year.

Yeah but then she won't be able to toast her sandwiches like that woman in America who purchased the Dell laptop with Ubuntu on it.
