As the OP, I'd like to thank users (particularly AJBritton) for the constructive points raised, shame about the less constructive ones but hey.

I personally decided not to go any further with looking at Ranger some time ago but I'm certain it has it's place in some Schools. I have a colleague in a hard pressed secondary who has deployed it and really benefits from it and again, he is certainly no moron. Single-handedly supporting 1600 users sometimes means you have to take the path of least resistance which Ranger has been for him.

Re: Thinking Of Buying Ranger - Any Views Please?

I am a new user to this forum, and am a little disappointed to see some of the posts on this thread, however, I would like to balance the argument slightly, I currently support 77 schools and have implemented ranger on over 30 of them, we have developed an excellent relationship with Sentinel and I am a fan of their product.

That said it isn't for everyone and there are pros and cons with any implementation. Don't rule it out though, it's an excellent product with some good developments.

If you would like to know more about our experiences in North Tyneside LEA then send me a message or give me a call and I would be happy to discuss it in further detail.

    Rob.

They pay that much for some unknown silly reason, i dont know. Anyway, they dont pay that now, as I redone the whole network and they use something else.

Ric_: They had 2 techies as well as CSE.. the techies left because they wanted a normal windows network and it wasnt a user friendly interface.

As an extention to the question, a few years ago, me and a friend decided to create our own product to assist techies and teachers who couldnt afford Ranger and CSE.. im not advertising it, but it does all the same stuff (the useful bits) and costs less than the yearly maintenance of the bigger names. If you want to give it a go NetMan, theres a 30-day trial which you can install and uninstall if you dont like it. PM me for info.

    Hi there Free444etc..

I think you are right to the most part, but Ranger is a front end to windows, and it does make things a little easier to manage for some people, we all have our own way to do things.

Things like changing passwords and creating user accounts etc, yes can be done with active directory and the rest. But what about things like, if a child accesses a website/program that they arent allowed to access.. I dont know about Ranger, but i know the software I helped to create alerts the teacher/you when they access these things.. you cant easily achieve that by other means.

How about things like, viewing the screen of the child? I cant think of any easy way to do that either.

But like i said, i do agree with you in a sense. I think Ranger's price is so high because they have included so many un-useful features (that may well be accomplished in other ways).

    thanks,

    jon

    NetSupport works better

Use DNA with the relevant bits and bobs and it also does all your auditing for you - this is for the wiki though. Please direct further suggestions there.

OK! I just spent ages cleaning this topic up...

Please leave ALL constructive suggestions for alternatives to Ranger-like suites on the wiki.

Re: Thinking Of Buying Ranger - Any Views Please?

I was just trying to give examples of things that Ranger/Impero does that cant be achieved using active directory etc.. and i meant having the whole class on ya screen as thumbnails.

And NetSupport .. 4got that 1.. although the product we made is a quarter of the cost wish i could post the url up so u can compare to the big names

    Sorry Ric.. last 1

    ..whats a wiki?

A wiki is a website that anyone can edit the documents so many people can contribute to things such as documentation and such.
    a big one is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/
