Internet Gateway Device Discovery and Control Client

a windows network service component called

Internet Gateway Device Discovery and Control Client

has mysteriously appeared on some laptops and is playing havoc with laptop network connections. This occurs coupled with the 1394 network being enabled, connected! and in many cases being of higher priority than the wired ethernet connection.

network appears connected but disfunctional. disabling 1394 and removing the component and in some cases additionally using winsockfix, solves the issue.

suspect laptops being put on home internet connections are getting a windows update that I havent authorised on the network.

Could be the UPnP extention that Windows can use to detect and configure the hardware with. If your laptops are domain joined you could set Windows to refuse Windows updates directly from MS using group policy and just use a WSUS server to push the updates that you want safely.

You can tell it to only grab the updates from your WSUS server but you must also set the laptops to hide the Windows Update entry points in GP so that they don't run it manually.
