we had a server failure last week and had to replace the hdd's. server 2K3 was installed from new on the C drive, and all backed up files etc were restored. the problem we have is that every folder which was shared now has read only permissions, even on the C drive, where no backup was restored. despite changing the permissions and applying the changes, as soon as you close the dialogue window, it goes back to read only. staff and pupil home folders, also restored, allow users write permissions. we can't figure it out. any ideas?

Check the share permissions as well as the file permissions. By default Windows 2003 sets read only on shares and of course Windows will always default to the most restrictive permission. The way round it is to give everyone full access on shares and set access using file permissions.
Are you refering to the grey read only tick (as in its not on or off). Its a green block on my xp machine, rather than empty or a tick.
Its a tri-mode flag. See this page for some details: http://redmondmag.com/columns/articl...itorialsID=652
Norphy - thanks for that help. red faces (no, the spelling is correct) all round this end.
DMcCoy - must make my questions clearer. that's what we were seeing tho'
I've been caught by it more than once m8, I wouldn't worry about it![]()
