Web Filtering
Hi
I support a school in leicester city and have access to the EMBC web filtering site.
Today the head asked me whether it is possible to have different level filtering for staff and pupils?
Is this possible? Is there something i need to do on the server to make this work?
Thanks

The idea is that through the WAT tool you can assign individuals a filtering level. Once they log into the embc portal they get their personal filtering level. When they log off it goes back to your site default.

What i want is whenever they open up internet explorer, pupils and staff will have access to different sites?
Is this possible? How do i do this?

2nd October 2008, 01:33 PM #4 I am struggling to understand what you want. Do you want a different home page when they start IE (controlable by GPOs within your network), do you want a different looking login page for EMBC or do you want to go to a different page once they have logged into the EMBC? This is different to filtering, which is once they have logged in they can access sites differently depending on which group they are in (eg group 2 may be used for students and give level 2 filtering, but group 3 is for general staff and give group 1 filtering ... if you are not logging in then you pick up the site level filtering which should be set at 4!)

I don't want them to access it via the EMBC site at all. What i want is that i want to set different level filtering for users.
I have access to the netsweeper site which has a group policy set for all users that uses internet within the school. What i wondered was if there was a way of applying different level of filtering on AD for differernt user?

2nd October 2008, 02:22 PM #6 Ahh, you want to integrate the filtering with your AD accounts?
This is currently not possible, though it is on the horizon and being trialled shortly.
Currently, if you want different levels of filtering then you have to log into the portal.

2nd October 2008, 07:14 PM #7 Sparkeh is right, not possible right now. The best you can do at the moment is to have different groups in NetSweeper (which you would have to have anyway with an AD linked setup) with staff being in one and students being in the other bt the authentication point is still the EMBC login page.

2nd October 2008, 10:22 PM #8 I give the staff and students the same level of filtering here. I think if you are less restrictive for staff you will get the argument "Well it works for me!".
If you keep them both the same the staff can check before the lesson to ensure that the site they want to show, works fine for students.

3rd October 2008, 12:14 PM #9 I'd agree with the above poster. The last thing you want is a member of staff planning a lesson around a particular web site, then when the students go to it you find it blocked!
I'd say best practice is that group policy directs staff and pupils to different pages of an intranet to relay important information.
