Does anyone have a list of known problems (and solutions also!!) which can occur when students are 'limited' users (ie not Power Users).
I know that in the past there were problems with certain versions of Office which expected to be able to create files in its own program folder.
In low risk instalations (primary schools) I have often added the Domain Users group to the local Power Users group to make life easy. I no longer want to do this though.
What do other members do??
The only problems you will have is with bad software that needs to write to the HKLM or the system drive or something. You just need to adjust the permissions accordingly on the items that need to be accessed/modified. In these cases regmon and filemon from winternals are your best friends.
I've had problems with software being unable to use the TEMP directory as it wants too . Overcome by explicitly setting read/write permision for users and "pupils" & "staff" or whatever you call the groups.

I run all my users as standard Domain Users, with nothing special on the Workstations, all works well, but software is all tested 1st, and explicit modifications made to the files and folders on the machine.
The only software that we run that gets the hump is Paint Shop Pro 7 and even then it works if you give them modify access on the folder. Everything else works AFAIK or at least we've had no complaints![]()
Yeah some of the older Image editors had a habit of trying to grab graphic file associations every time they were run. Of course Limited User can't change Class Root (HKCR) as well as HKLM noted above hence lots of nice error boxes.Originally Posted by Norphy
My favourite was Microsoft Photo Editor which came with Office 2000. Who'd thought Microsoft wouldn't follow their own Logo standards.
It took until Office XP for them acquire a taste for their own dog food![]()

Yeah, I remember the mods needed for photoeditor to get it to work properly, but they are no more with Office 2003. One that I have problems with is Paint Shop Pro 9, if you remove the shortcuts to the uninstaller, it will refuse to open as a standard user, and it trys to remake them.
