Virtual server does not support any non windows guests at the moment. Not that they don't work, but they are unsupported.
Amusingly Microsoft have stated they will support customers running Linux on Virtual Server.

Xen is another matter altogether as its open source and free in both senses.

But can't run Windows because the drivers were developed for Windows at Berkeley under Microsofts restrictive non-compete licensing scheme. Until someone reverse engineers it
New multi-core vurtualisation chips should fix this:

Lots. I use the infrastructure pack for each blade and a single copy of virtual center. Yearly maintenance charge too if you want updates, and I'm not missing out on version 3!

Commercial is around £4k for a 2cpu infrastructure node and 1 year support and updates, after that support and updates is about 1k per year per node.

There is an education price I believe, mine were cheaper due to a dell price break and oem deal. I still need to give them a reference, but my job has changed over the last year causing progress to be slow, almost done now though!
