    help on displaying a popup message when logging in

    hi

    Is there a way to display a popup message when a user logs into the network on a client machine saying by logging in you have accepted our policies?

    Can this done in Group Policy or does it have to be done over scripts.

    Thanks

    Tim

    There is a GPO for setting this message before login. The registry key is LegalNoticeCaption/LegalNoticeString but I think the GPO might be "Display a message to users before login" or something like that. Someone else is bound to know it on here though

    Re: help on displaying a popup message when logging in

    To display a custom message after the kids logon then try the script below.
    If you run a login script (either from a GPO or from the user profiles)
    then you can do it from there, if you want a GUI popup rather than a
    dos-box window you could use windows scripting host ....

    A straight forward way would be to paste the folling into a .js file and
    then add the .js file to the GPO/usersettings/scripts/logon section, you
    can grow from there ...

    ======= logonmsg.js ==========

    var oShell, sMsg, sTitle, nFlags;
    oShell = WScript.createObject("WScript.Shell");

    sMsg = "First line of msg\n" +
    "Second Line of msg\n" +
    "Third line of message";

    sTitle = "Title of message";
    nTimeout = 30;
    nFlags = 64;

    oShell.popup(sMsg, nTimeout, sTitle, nFlags);
    WScript.quit(0);

    If you want to make it even more flash then do it with a web page:

    Set oIE=createobject("internetexplorer.application")
    Do While (oIE.Busy)
    Wscript.Sleep 250
    Loop
    oIE.resizable=false
    oIE.width=400
    oIE.height=400
    oIE.toolbar=false
    oIE.menubar=false
    oIE.visible=true
    oIE.navigate "http://intranet/infopage.htm"
    Do While (oIE.Busy)
    Wscript.Sleep 250
    Loop
    wscript.sleep 10000
    oIE.quit

    this will open Internet Explorer, set the size to 400x400 (pick
    appropriate values for your page) and turns off the toolbars. It then
    loads a page from your intranet and displays it for 10 seconds (10,000
    milliseconds) and closes.

    Apart from the fact that this can look "prettier" it has the advantage
    that "someone else" can maintain the message content - they just have to
    edit the web page and a different message appears when users log on
    without having to change the script.

    start>run>gpedit.msc

    That will get you to the group policy editor

    also in AD you can get to it, you can right click on an organisational unit, and go to properties and there is a group policy tab there.

    Try that

    This isn't true on W2k3 server. You need to use the Group Policy Management Console in Administrative Tools instead.

    Also if your on a WinXP workstation and have W2k domain controllers you should download and install the GPMC from MS and use it too. It makes your life a lot easier.

    Not entirely true if you dont have GPMC installed on w2k3.. and you can get to GPMC by right clicking the OU, you just have to click open and it'll open GPMC. Should really have GPMC installed tho as it does make life alot easier.

    Funny when i installed my w2k3 server it did not have GPMC so i would say it doesn't come as standard... not sure about DC install tho.

    Hmmm doesn't this create too much replication traffic. Also it's best not burden application/DB servers with the DC overhead. This also makes your AD more robust as there are less variables to conted with.
