    Baffling me a bit as TTS engine is built into XP!

    Yes, it is running an different version of the TTS engine that is used for stuff like Inspiration and Kidspiration.

    Try installing one of these and then give it a go:
    Sp5TTIntXP.exe from here (V5.1):

    Or spchapi.EXE from here (v4)
    Download details: Speech SDK

    The version 4 one has no MSI extract option but you can repackage it as an MSI easily enough as I have done it for the above programs.

    Those didn't provide any joy, a MSM file basically.

    Worked after I added the following installers:

    Strange, worked for me. You would have needed to reboot after installing it. Anyway, good to hear that you got it solved.
