WPKG - looking good...

I've mentioned WPKG on the essential software list. It's an alternative way of getting software onto PCs. If the software can be installed silently (e.g. setup.exe /s), the WPKG can get it on to the PC. The project looks to be quite active with some recent updates. When I get the chance I'm going to give it a try.

You just dispelled a myth for me
I was under the impression I needed AD to do registry style GPO and deploy software... now all I need is samba and WPKG.

nnnnyyyeeeesssss... Not strictly true. Each GPO (Group Policy Object) encompasses a number of things including software installation (definitely not registry entries), security settings (who knows?), Internet Explorer settings (???) and policies (mostly registry entries I grant you).

I believe it breaks down into, things that are under the Administrative Templates sections are the Registry Keys, settings in the other parts are not.

OMG
I saw this post at 14:15 and by 15:00 I had it up and running.

I put the 4 files needed onto a Win98 share, edited them as per Wiki and tried out installing firefox onto a couple of XP workstations by running the workstation startup script.

Unbelievably it worked 1st time.

Admittedly, Firefox was not completly set up (no Proxy and it still wanted to go through the import settings from IE) but still very impressed.

This looks very good for simple primary school installs.

(Rushes out to cancel W2k3 server orders :P )
