3rd June 2008, 10:50 AM #1 Backing up Exchange 2007
Has anyone successfully backed up exchange 2007 with either Backup exec 11 or 12. I am using 12, but i need to install the MAPI and Client Collaboration Data objects on the exchange server, but when i come to install it, i get an error asking for outlook 2007 to be installed. Has anyone else come across this problem. I dont want to install outlook 2007 on my exchange server but if needs be then so be it.
Can someone let me know
Thanks
Tim

its not recommended to install outlook on a server (well that was the way for 2003)
as for BENT 11-12 i have never had much luck with it to be honest. I am a huge fan of NT backup (it works!) and exmerge. I have moved/restored/saved many exchange servers with a few PST files from exmerge. Its not pretty but it works.

3rd June 2008, 01:27 PM #3 Hmmm interesting... I've heard about needing to install that component with 11d - haven't had much chance to look into 12 yet. Am I right in thinking that 12 uses VSS based backups rather than streaming type (which is disabled by default in Exchange 2007 from what I've read)
Have you read through the Symantec Support Forums yet? Usually the common issues crop up in there...

Yep got 11d on ours i think, and yes it did require outlook, and unlike exchange 2003 it did not moan about the outlook install.
all works well.

4th June 2008, 04:56 PM #6 Yes iv got exchange backing up on backup exec 12d, you will need to make sure you exchage server is upto date, the backup server has the same updates as the exchange server, i also found out that the user account you use to backup your data needs to have a mailbox. once i done that all was fine.

Outlook 2007 and Exchange 2007 no longer share the mapi.dll library so installing them both on a single machine is no longer a problem like it used to be.

11d and Exchange 2007 here, I have not installed Outlook on the server, all working fine.
Initially problems as our copy of BE was an oem copy that was build 6235, it just would not see the Exchange store at all. Installed the 7170 build and all was good. As long as you have build 7170, the necessary licenses and the remote agent is deployed to the server (and pointing to the right place) it should just work.
I was getting some fairly regular 'out of memory' errors out of BE coming from my mailbox server, but the latest E2K7 'rollup' seems to have resolved it!
