    SQL Server 2005 express & Win2k3

No idea if anyone else has come across this before but thought I'd share as I was trying to troubleshoot an HP Web JetAdmin install today.

SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Readme

2.10 Installing SQL Server Express on a Windows Domain Controller

Security Note We recommend against running SQL Server Express on a domain controller.
It is possible to install SQL Server Express on a Windows domain controller; however, it cannot run on a Windows Server 2003 domain controller as Local Service or Network Service. SQL Server service accounts should run as Windows domain user accounts. It is also possible to install SQL Server service accounts to run as Local System, but this option is not recommended.

Do not change the role of the server after you install SQL Server Express. For example, if you install SQL Server Express on a member server, do not use the Dcpromo tool to promote the server to a domain controller. Or, if you install SQL Server Express on a domain controller, do not use Dcpromo to demote the server to a member server. Changing the role of a server after you install SQL Server Express can result in loss of functionality and is not supported.
2.11 Existing SQL Native Client Installation May Cause Setup to Fail
HP seem to have missed this little nugget when they okayed it for use with Server Win2k3...

Now having fun removing it from one Domain controller...

Odd Backup Exec installs SQL 2005 Express for managing it's Db and we have that running on a DC.

At one site I run SQL 2005 SP2 on a 2003 DC with no problems using Windows Authentication. I can't see why the HP JetAdmin utility wouldn't run to be honest. Must be something specific about HP's software.

HP are right however that when a server is promoted to a DC, local accounts are disabled as of course AD takes over. Before logging on, the domain drop down menu only displays the domain and not local computer like you'd see with a member server or a workstation.

Yep... same thing here... but that is in the Knowledge Base... I wonder if they realise there was a problem and popped that in to cover their backsides..

HP should be more specific I agree. There are DCs and member servers. Quite simple really!?

I'm wondering if it'd be worth installing a VMWare server on the secondary DC and then installing a guestOS with WinXP on it to deal with this.

Being as all my schools are Primaries there's virtually no chance they'd have a WinServer 2k3 machine that wasn't a DC...

Learn something every day though I guess.

    LOL.. this gets better...

Got a WinXP VM setup... Started installing and the first thing it does is scream that it needs 1Gb of RAM.

Now, I know HP write bloatware but are you for real?!!
