Have you set it so it will go to the homepage when you open a tab?

you can launch IE7 without any add-ons temporarily , if it doesn’t cause any problems in this mode it will most probably be an add-on causing the problem.

Run it without add-ons you can find it here:
    Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools> Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)

    Start with the obvious:

    Tools > Options

Choose Delete (on the General tab) and Delete Temporary files and Cookies

Then, choose Settings (also on the General tab)
Uncheck "Open Home Page for new tabs..."

This should ensure that it isn't trying to open any webpage for a new tab.

Once you get the new tab, you can then try typing news.bbc.co.uk or whatever in the URL box to see if you can open it.

If you can, try checking the Home Page Setting again.

Yep certain things like Java will not work

Now run IE 7 normally disable one add-on at a time until you find the problem add-on.
