I am trying to set up "deny delete" on the children's work area
Within the fixed folder structure of our school share there is an area for children to save their work. Currently we use generic logins for pupils as sometimes they're with us for only a few days.
I trying to set it so within the childrens work area, pupils can create and name a folder and then save their work in it, but they are then not able to delete either the folder or anything inside.
I've tried setting Deny Delete permissions but although this allows them to create a folder and then not able to delete it, they can't rename it, ie it stays as "new folder".
Any ideas much appreciated!
Underneath all the pretty dialogs what a rename does is to:
1. create a new folder with the new name
2. copy the folder contents to the new folder (more complex than this but its irrelevant for the purposes of this discussion)
3. delete the old folder
You're falling down at 3 because you don't allow deletion of folders. In the advanced properties for the security permissions you can set the inheritable permissions on a files or folders or both. If you allow deletion of folders but not files I think that will do what you want.
How about setting up Shadow Volume Copy, run it every hour. Even if they do delete a folder, you at the most, an hour behind when you recover the deleted work, and it only take a second to recover deleted work
Thanks for the quick responses!
I'll give the "allow deletion of folders but not files" a go
Shadow copy seems a good safety net too
